If you won't be transacting insurance business in Washington after you move, just cancel your Washington resident license.
If you will be transacting insurance business in Washington after you move, then:
- Cancel your Washington resident license.
- Obtain a resident license from your new home state.
- Within 30 days, submit a written request for a non-resident Washington license with a copy of your new resident license.
You will not have to complete a new application or pay new license fees if your request is received within 30 days of the cancellation of your Washington resident license.
Your written request for a new non-resident license should include the following:
- Notice that your Washington license status has changed from resident to non-resident
- Your name and WAOIC number or social security number
- Your old resident and mailing addresses
- Your new resident and mailing addresses
- Attach a copy of your new resident license
- You may e-mail, fax or use regular mail to submit your request
If your request is not received within 30 days of the cancellation of your Washington resident license, then:
- Obtain a resident license from your new home state
- Call us before you apply online with Washington because we'll need to note your license record internally before our online system will allow you to list a new resident state on your online application.
- Apply online for a new license and pay new license fees
2. You have a resident license from another state but are moving to Washington
Pre-license education (PLE) and exam requirements must be completed by anyone who wants a resident license unless you had or have a resident license in another state before you move to Washington.
The PLE and exams can be waived if you complete the following within 90 days:
- Cancel your previous home state license.
- Obtain a letter of clearance from your previous home state department of insurance
- Within 90 days, apply for your resident Washington license online (including paying new license fees).
- Send us your letter of clearance.
- Send us a fingerprint card.
If we receive an application and letter of clearance but it has been more than 90 days since your previous home state license was cancelled, you will not qualify for the PLE and exam waiver. You'll have to complete our PLE and pass our exam(s) before you apply for your resident license.
3. You have a resident license from another state and a Washington non-resident license but are moving to Washington
Follow the steps listed in item 2 but call us before you apply online. We will need to modify your license record internally before our online system will allow you to list a new resident state on your online application.
4. You have a Washington non-resident license and resident license from another state but are changing your resident state
Send us notice (fax or e-mail) within 30 days of changing your home state and we will update our non-resident record accordingly. Remember, your non-resident license with Washington is granted based on you holding an active resident license with another state. Be sure we can verify your new resident license status online.
