Health insurance - Find a provider who takes your insurance

Some health plans allow you to see any doctor and some require you to use an approved network of doctors.

How to find a provider who takes your insurance

  • Understand what kind of health plan you have, such as a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) or Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). Each plan is different on the coverage it provides and what medical providers you can see.
  • Find out if you are required to use an approved list of doctors, or if you can see any doctor or medical provider you want. If it's the former, ask your health plan for a list of approved providers - most have this information online. And know that these lists are updated frequently, with providers joining or dropping off the plan.
  • If you decide to go to a doctor who doesn't participate in your health plan, ask how much you'll have to pay.
  • Also, ask if you need a referral to see a specialist.
