Change Healthcare — a subsidiary of the UnitedHealth Group that also operates Optum Solutions — was impacted by a cybersecurity event on February 21, 2024. The event compromised systems used by providers and insurers to fill prescriptions, approve medical services, and submit costs for reimbursement.
This cyberattack caused delays for patients getting necessary medication, as well as having prior approvals and claims processed. It impeded reimbursement submissions and payments to hospitals, individual practitioners and outpatient facilities and pharmacies.
The Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC) continues to work with UnitedHealth and impacted health benefit managers in Washington to mitigate the impacts of this event.
