Make sure to read all your policy documents that mention volcano coverage. Talk to your agent if you have questions about coverage or think you need more than what's outlined in your policy.
What's covered
Homeowner insurance:
- Ash
- Dust
- Particles
- Lava flow
- Removing some ash, dust or particles from inside or outside your home
If there are several eruptions within 72 hours, you only need to pay one deductible for damage.
Flood insurance:
If you live in an area that floods, flood insurance covers damage from floods or mudflows.
Auto insurance:
If your car gets damaged and you have comprehensive auto coverage, consider filing a claim. But you'll have to pay any deductible.
If there isn't a lot of damage or it isn't more than your deductible, you may want to pay for the repairs yourself.
What’s not covered
Homeowner insurance:
- Ash that builds up due to wind or other causes after the eruption
- Earth movement
- Landslides
- Shock waves
- Earth shaking from the eruption
Auto insurance:
After an eruption, check for damage to your car right away. If you wait too long, your insurance may not cover it. You're still responsible for keeping your car in good condition, such as changing your oil and air filters regularly.
