Protect your property

Think about buying additional insurance to protect your property from potential damage.

Landslide insurance

Here are a couple of options:

Content coverage - This is coverage you add to your homeowner insurance. It protects what's inside your home from all dangers, including earth movement. However, it doesn't cover the building. Some insurers may not offer this coverage.

Structure coverage - This coverage protects your house and any other unattached buildings on your property. It's also called a "Difference in Conditions" (DIC) policy. DIC policies include coverage for landslides, mudflows, earthquakes and floods. Your agent or broker may be able to get you this coverage from a surplus line insurer. These companies insure risks that other insurers usually don't.

Flood insurance

Homeowner insurance usually doesn't cover flood damage. You'll need to buy flood insurance separately. Flood insurance may cover damage from some kinds of earth movement, such as mudflows, flash floods and erosion due to water.

Earthquake insurance

You'll also need to buy earthquake insurance separately. You can get it as its own coverage or add it to your homeowner insurance.
